The Agenzia delle Dogane (Customs Agency), former Dipartimento delle Dogane (Customs Department) of the Ministry of Finance, was set up by Legislative Decree n. 300 of 30th July 1999, art. 57, and has been operational since 1st January 2001.

The Agency, as a customs authority, performs all functions and tasks endorsed to it in customs matters, movement of goods and internal taxation related to international trade. The Agency also inspects and controls trade, production and consumption of excisable products and natural resources, and fights against fiscal and non-fiscal violations.
